IN CONVERSATION WITH VANIA GOUVEIA: THE ART OF TIME, LEATHER, AND MEANING

In the heart of Paris, surrounded by the scent of fine leather and quiet focus, Vania Gouveia welcomes visitors into her atelier, a sanctuary where time slows down and hands speak the language of patience.

Her journey didn’t begin here. For years, Vania worked in marketing, moving at the relentless pace of corporate life until, around the age of forty, she felt something missing, the need for something tangible, something that could connect her work to meaning. “I had been thinking about craftsmanship for a while,” she recalls. “Leather came naturally. It’s a material I’ve always loved, versatile, alive, and timeless.”

That simple fascination became a turning point. Ten years ago, she trained in leathercraft, stepping into a new rhythm of life. The precision, the patience, and the physical connection to material became her meditation. “Time and craftsmanship go hand in hand,” she says. “I learned to slow down and discovered that I loved taking my time; doing things properly, achieving what I envisioned by not hurrying.”

Today, her atelier reflects that philosophy. Every object, whether a restored heirloom handbag or a custom creation, carries both artistry and emotion. Clients often bring cherished bags inherited from their mothers or grandmothers, and for Vania, restoring them is an act of continuity. “The idea is to keep it alive,” she explains. “To make sure these pieces are used again, not forgotten.”

Beyond her own creations, Vania opens her world to others through workshops, playful discovery sessions for children, and immersive introductions for adults. “Participants often come saying they’re not crafty,” she smiles, “but after a few hours, they leave with something beautiful they’ve made themselves. That joy, that pride, is what strikes me the most.”

Her design philosophy mirrors her values: timelessness over trend, durability over display. “I don’t see myself as a fashion brand,” she clarifies. “My products aren’t trendy. I want to make designs that endure, that won’t feel outdated in six months.” Her emblem, a small bird (Swallow), symbolizes freedom and lightness; a subtle signature she often includes on her pouches and coin purses.

Her work is also about presence, being fully absorbed in the act of creation. “When your hands are busy, your mind is calm,” she says softly. “You’re not wandering through toxic thoughts. You’re right there, in the moment.”

In her world, beauty is not a luxury; it’s a form of balance, a bridge between patience and passion. As she finishes threading the linen coated with beeswax, she smiles. “I’ve turned a passion into a profession. That’s a real privilege; few people get to live their passion.”

Each hide she works with has its own story. Many come from dormant stocks of major fashion houses or European tanneries, materials waiting to be reborn. “Sometimes, it’s love at first sight,” she says. “I see a beautiful hide, and I know I have to bring it back to life.”

For Vania, craftsmanship is more than a skill; it’s a commitment. “We put our heart and soul into it,” she reflects. “People often don’t realize the time and devotion behind every handmade piece. That’s why I love explaining my process, it’s part of educating, sharing, connecting.”
